Sir McCartney, who is listed in The Guinness Book Of Records as the most successful musician and composer in popular music history, with sales of 100 million singles and 60 gold discs, have added another laurel to his credit with the Q Icon Awards 2007.
Since they began in 1990, the Q Awards have become one of Britain’s biggest and best publicized music awards, helped in no small part by the often-boisterous behaviour of the celebrities who attend the event. Perhaps the most notorious event of recent years was the ceremony of 2004, at which Elton John accused Madonna of cheating fans by miming on stage, after she had been nominated for a Best Live Act award. This year’s ceremony marked Q Magazine’s coming of age - this year being its 21st birthday.
A visibly drunk Damon Albarn, who earlier bemused the star-studded audience with a rambling speech when he collected The Q Inspiration Award, presented the award to the 65-year-old singer.
Paul presented a lengthy acceptance speech at the ceremony but what everyone notice was that he did not mention his estranged wife Heather Mills, his marriage with whom had been a failure. However, he thanked his former Beatles bandmates, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. He also expressed his gratitude towards his late wife Linda McCartney, who had stood by him through tough times.
Grammy Award-winning Australian pop singer-songwriter and occasional actress, Kylie Minogue won the Q Idol accolade and the most significant aspect of her award was the noble reason behind it .She was honoured for her patience and bravery in fighting for her life against breast cancer. For Kylie, the award ceremony was her ‘first day back at work’ as the 39-year-old singer made her first appearance at an awards ceremony since returning to the limelight after battling cancer.
As she went to collect her award, she was met with a standing ovation from the celebrity audience at the afternoon ceremony in London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. Her new Marilyn Monroe-esque hair-do and a figure-hugging black frock attracted a great deal of attention from the crowd.
Though Q Awards might have honoured Kylie Minogue, but she was not so well admired by former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown, as he launched into a stinging tirade against her at the ceremony by calling her music ‘rubbish’ and ‘for kids’.
Arctic Monkeys were named ‘best act in the world today’, while Kate Nash was named best breakthrough artist. Amy Winehouse, who has been in and out of headlines and rehab in recent months, won the best album prize for Back to Black, but didn’t attend the ceremony. The Honorees were chosen by readers of music magazine Q.
