Soul singer Mary J Blige has swept the Billboard music awards in the US, collecting nine trophies, including female R&B artist of the year. This is for sure her first time in career that she has received so many awards. But a little heart breaking for her as she lost out to Barbados-born singer Rihanna in the female singer of the year category.

R&B diva Mary J. Blige’s comeback album, “The Breakthrough,” delivered nine awards to the 35-year-old singer, including R&B/Hip-Hop artist of the year, female R&B artist of the year and R&B/Hip-Hop album of the year. The album debuted at the top of the Billboard charts in December 2005 and has sold 2.6 million copies since.

The Def Jam recording artist Rihanna walked away with the awards for female artist of the year, female Hot 100 artist of the year and Pop 100 artist of the year. For the top award of female artist of the year, she beat out Beyonce and Mary J. Blige. A little sympathies to Beyonce as Rihanna was her only competitor in the awards show you guys know why. But never mind Beyonce Jay-Z is still yours.

A 17-year-old lothario, Chris Brown, took home new artist of the year, male artist of the year and artist of the year awards. Veteran performer Tony Bennett won a lifetime achievement honour. Carrie Underwood and rapper T.I. tied for second with five wins each. The American Idol winner’s debut album “Some Hearts” won the coveted album of the year prize underwood_65

Performances at the Billboard Awards included Janet Jackson, Fergie, will.i.am, Ludacris, Pharrell, Gwen Stefani and the night’s big winner, Blige. Nickelback, Kid Rock and ZZ Top closed the show.
