Famed country singer Kathy Mattea says that she first discovered her love for singing while attending a Girl Scouts camp as a kid in West Virginia.

The 47-year-old country music star told The Charleston Gazette,

I loved the sheer joy of singing simple songs in harmony and in rounds. I also learned to live in harmony with the land and to have a reverence for nature.

Mattea who is a native of Cross Lanes, will be the key speaker for the Girl Scouts Black Diamond Council’s annual fundraiser luncheon in Charleston. It probably is time she pays back the Scout council, which helped her rediscover herself at a very young age.

Mattea revealed that she will sing and talk about how scouting and music helped her in discovering the aim of her life. She added,

I can say more in three minutes of singing than in ten minutes of speaking. The songs facilitate my message.

Mattea already has two Grammies to her credit. She has also been honored as the female vocalist of the year twice by the Country Music Association. She has also won a CMA Single of the Year award for Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses.
