19-year-old British soul singer Joss Stone’s third album “Introducing Joss Stone,” has directly become the number two in the US Billboard album chart. This is the highest ever new entry by a British female artist in US chart history. Billboard claims that it sold 118,000 copies of the album in its first week, which was just 11,000 less that the number one by US rock act Modest Mouse.
Other UK stars who have earlier claimed fame in the US include Amy Winehouse at 10, Corinne Bailey Rae at 22 and Lily Allen at 41. British stars such as Snow Patrol, James Morrison and The Fratellis have more recently tasted success in the US music chart.
Joss Stone’s previous two albums, The Soul Sessions and Mind, Body and Soul, reached at 38 and 11 positions respectively in the US charts.
Despite of all the overseas success, her latest album has fared less well in Britain where it entered at number 12 and fell to 24.
Stone’s talent was recognized when she won a BBC talent show at a mere age of 14. She was later noticed by US record executive Steve Greenberg. Her debut album, The Soul Sessions, sold 500,000 copies alone in the US alone
