The incredible Jay Z who is stepping up every day has stepped on top of every body in the business. Rapper Jay-Z came out on top of the post-Thanksgiving U.S. pop album charts Wednesday, tying the Rolling Stones for the third-most No. 1 hits.
He is not up there because “Kingdom Come” (Def Jam) sold a hefty 680,000 copies in the week according to Nielsen SoundScan but the man in talks is doing something that’s pretty much unheard of up to this point in hip-hop. For the demand that is high so he went out to promote the new album in an innovative way. He marketed his product (himself) and in quite an effective way by ‘The Jay-Z Hangar Tour,’ which was in a way a marathon tour, by performing seven shows in seven cities in seventeen odd hours.
It marked the former retiree’s best sales week ever, and ninth chart-topper. The Beatles lead that list with 19, followed by Elvis Presley with 10.
However, the Beatles mash up album Beatles ‘Love,’ though considered tampering with the classical music bowed at No. 4 with 272,000.
“American Idol” season five finalist Chris Daughtry, whose band goes by his surname, landed at No. 2 with his self-titled RCA debut, which sold 304,000 units. The multi-label hits compilation “NOW 23″ kept the No. 3 spot warm for a second week, selling 289,000.
Beyonce’s “B’Day” experienced a major bounce back into the upper echelons of the chart, moving up three places to No. 6 with 173,000 units. I think a sticker on the cover of ‘B’Day’, advertising the contents that include ‘Deja Vu’ featuring Jay-Z, it also says. ‘Ring the Alarm.’ in addition to a bonus track: ‘Listen.’ really worked well for Beyonce. And the much talked sticker did not indicate that the album includes one of the year’s best and maybe biggest pop songs. In other words, there is no mention of a fast-rising hit called ‘Irreplaceable.’
In ‘Ring the Alarm’ she convincingly impersonated a threatened girlfriend: ‘I’ll be damned if I see another chick on your arm.’ One couldn’t resist the urge to de-anonymize the ‘arm’ (Jay-Z’s, surely) and the ‘chick’ (the pop starlet Rihanna). Surely people love the hottie for her boldness that she shows in her song. Hopefully, the new project will work for Beyonce to make sure she matches Jay-Z perfectly.
