The Grammy nominations
this morning went pretty much the way it was predicted, no doubt those critics still find Grammys have one foot firmly planted in 1953, and the other wherever the dart they’re about to throw lands. However, not this time, it seems like Grammy has started to evolve from its rudimentary image and are now venturing into the steamier side of pop, rock, R&B and rap. And this years nominations list means that they’re paying attention to the trends, at least a little bit.

There were some murmurs about Mary J. Blige saying that she might be at her career crossroads, that after 12 years in the business, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul was losing her throne to younger artists. But trashing all the whispers apart on Thursday, the Recording Academy reconfirmed Blige’s place in music royalty, showering her with eight Grammy nominations, including record and song of the year for her hit “Be Without You,” off her album “The Breakthrough.”

It’s shaping up to be Mary J. Blige’s year. On Monday, the singer collected nine trophies at the Billboard Music Awards and last month earned two at the American Music Awards.

Other multiple nominees included the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who had six, and the Dixie Chicks, who had five. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, which has won only two Grammys in its nearly quarter-century career, followed Blige with six nominations. Earning five nominations each were British singer-songwriter James Blunt, the Dixie Chicks, Prince, producer Rick Rubin, Black Eyed Peas, producer Danger Mouse, and film composer John Williams.

The 49th annual awards show will be broadcast live on Feb. 11.
